Today we got into Skagway before dawn to wake the area covered in mist, Norwegian Jewel and Norwegian Pearl were already berthed and the Grand Princess followed us in.
Surrounded by the Tayia Inlet and the coastal mountains, Skagway sits atop the north most point of the inside passage in northern Alaska. This distinctive geography made Skagway the perfect starting point for gold miners hoping to strike it rich in the Yukon where in August 1896, gold was discovered. Now it is the last port for the cruise ships that only do the Inside Passage, at peak season 10000 passengers can descend on the town. The season is 5 months from mid May to mis September where the town swells from its normal population of 600 residents to over 2000 workers.
The return trip was via the White Pass & Yukon Route Scenic Railway in vintage carriages which took 1 ½ hours, the fog had partially lifted so the trip down the mountain was very scenic.
At the end we where taken to Liarsville for lunch an a spot of gold panning, what we found would not have paid for the trip.
It was then off to the Red Onion Saloon which was Skagways most exclusive bordello in its hey day, upstairs is very much left how it was back then in the late 1890’s
